Goal

Smart waste management in Nicosia, Cyprus

Project and customer description

Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, has decided to modernize its waste management system by introducing smart technologies. As a Mediterranean city with growing environmental challenges, Nicosia aims to improve efficiency in collection, reduce unnecessary trips, and maintain cleaner public spaces for its citizens.

Challenge

The city required a reliable solution to gain real-time insights into the fill levels of underground bins and 1,100-liter containers. Without accurate data, waste collection was often carried out based on fixed schedules, leading to inefficiencies such as half-empty pickups and occasional overflows.

Solution

In partnership with Sensoneo’s local reseller, the city deployed 150 ultrasonic sensors to monitor underground and 1,100-liter containers. The sensors are connected via the LoRaWAN IoT network, providing continuous and stable communication of fill-level data to the central system. This digitalisation enables the city to monitor container usage remotely and plan collections based on actual needs.

Impact

The deployment of smart sensors in Nicosia provides the city with a real-time overview of bin capacities. This allows waste management teams to optimize collection schedules, avoid unnecessary trips, and prevent overflowing containers. As a result, the city is able to operate more efficiently, reduce operational costs, and ensure a higher quality of service for its residents.

Key achievements:

  • Comprehensive digitalisation of waste infrastructure
  • Reliable monitoring of bin fill levels in real time
  • Data-driven optimization of collection routes
  • Prevention of overflowing bins and unnecessary pickups
  • Reduced operational costs and vehicle mileage
  • Lower fuel consumption and emissions
  • Cleaner public spaces and improved quality of service for citizens
