Monitoring street containers in the capital of Iceland, Reykjavík

Project and customer description

The City of Reykjavík, capital of Iceland, launched a project to monitor fill levels in street containers using smart sensor technology. In total, 250 Sensoneo Single Sensors 3.0 are being deployed to track waste in containers of 40 liters capacity. The project was secured through a bidding process, won by Sensoneo’s reseller partner in Iceland, who is also responsible for the deployment. Connectivity is ensured through NB-IoT and LoRaWAN networks.

Challenge

The city needed a reliable, data-driven way to monitor container fill levels in order to optimize waste collection, reduce unnecessary pick-ups, and improve operational efficiency.

Solution

Reykjavík implemented Sensoneo Single Sensors 3.0 in 250 street containers, connected via NB-IoT and LoRaWAN, to provide accurate real-time monitoring of fill levels.

Impact

The system enables the city to optimize collection routes, minimize operational costs, and improve sustainability by reducing fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions.

Key achievements

  • Real-time monitoring of street container fill levels.
  • Seamless IoT connectivity via NB-IoT and LoRaWAN.
  • Improved efficiency in urban waste management.
  • Foundation for more sustainable city operations.
