Smart waste sensors deployed across BART facilities

Project and customer description

In Q1 2025, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) successfully deployed the first batch of Sensoneo fill-level monitoring sensors across its network. BART, the seventh-busiest rapid transit system in the U.S., serves 50 stations over 131 miles of track and carried 50.7 million passenger trips in 2024. The project focuses on monitoring dumpsters and roll-on/roll-off containers at train stations and maintenance facilities, with IoT connectivity enabled via the CAT-M network.

Challenge

BART needed an effective solution to modernize waste management, reduce inefficiencies in collection, and support its commitment to sustainability while improving the rider experience.

Solution

Deployment of Sensoneo’s smart sensors provided accurate, real-time data on container fill levels. The system allows BART to optimize collection schedules, adjust operations quickly, and maintain higher standards of cleanliness across its facilities.

Impact

The initiative strengthens BART’s sustainability goals, reduces unnecessary waste collection, and contributes to cleaner, more welcoming stations for tens of thousands of daily riders.

Key achievements

  • First deployment of smart waste monitoring within a major U.S. transit system.
  • Real-time monitoring of dumpsters and roll-on/roll-off containers.
  • Seamless IoT connectivity via CAT-M network.
  • Improved efficiency and sustainability in daily operations.
  • Positive impact on passenger experience and station cleanliness.
