Project and customer description

Granvia Operation is a 100% subsidiary of VINCI Highways, focused on the 24/7 maintenance of entrusted motorways. The company’s mission is to ensure the highest possible security, quality of service, and minimal environmental footprint.

Granvia Operation is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the R1 motorway between Nitra and Tekovské Nemce (51.4 km) and for the northern bypass highway near Banská Bystrica.

Challenge

Granvia Operation oversees several service areas along the R1 motorway. Waste collection was expensive and time-consuming due to the long distances and lack of insight into bin status. The company’s main goal was to maintain clean service areas with no overflowing bins, while also improving efficiency and resource utilization.

Solution

To address these challenges, Granvia Operation implemented Sensoneo smart fill-level sensors in bins placed across service areas on the R1 PR1BINA expressway. Single sensors were selected based on bin type.

The project began with a Proof of Concept in 2017, followed by a pilot stage in 2018. Since March 2019, the solution has been fully operational.

The system eliminates unnecessary pickups of empty or half-empty bins and enables predictive planning for when bins will reach capacity. Early notifications and alarm features help prevent emergency situations. Analytics provide essential data for understanding waste patterns and optimizing collection processes.

Impact

The deployment of Sensoneo smart sensors has enabled Granvia Operation to optimize waste collection across motorway service areas. The company now benefits from reliable predictions of bin fill levels, which reduces unnecessary trips, saves workforce resources, and ensures that bins are collected only when needed. The solution has proven to be a valuable cost-cutting tool while also improving operational efficiency.

With access to real-time data and predictive analytics, Granvia Operation has avoided emergency situations caused by overflowing bins and maintained consistently clean service areas. This has directly enhanced the quality of service provided to motorway users.

Key achievements:

  • Optimization of waste collection and elimination of unnecessary pickups
  • Improved efficiency through reduced workforce requirements and fewer trips
  • Cost savings related to collection and maintenance operations
  • Data-driven decision making for better waste lifecycle management
  • Prevention of emergency situations thanks to early notifications
  • Cleaner and better-maintained service areas for motorway users
