Efficient waste management for highway service areas

Highway operators are responsible for keeping service areas clean, safe, and accessible for drivers
Overflowing bins or inefficient servicing not only harm service quality but also drive up costs, as crews often need to travel long distances between service areas. Without real-time monitoring, operators lack visibility into the actual status of bins, which makes planning extremely difficult. This often results in unnecessary trips to half-empty bins, wasted workforce capacity, and higher fuel consumption. At the same time, missed collections can lead to overflowing bins, unpleasant odors, and littering—issues that directly affect the comfort of travelers and damage the overall image of highway services.
Sensoneo solution
Sensoneo partnered with Granvia Operation to implement smart fill-level monitoring across service area bins. Using Sensoneo Single Sensors, the system provides real-time updates on waste levels, enabling predictive planning of pickups and eliminating unnecessary trips to service areas.
The sensors, first piloted in 2017 and rolled out in 2018, send early notifications when bins approach capacity. This data is displayed in the Sensoneo Waste Management System (WMS), empowering operators with analytics to optimize waste collection routes and workforce planning. With this solution, Granvia Operation ensures bins are collected on time, avoiding overflows and maintaining high service quality while also reducing costs and environmental impact.
