Reference: Large-scale smart waste management project in Bratislava, Slovakia

85 000 Digitized bins & containers
1 753 Smart sensors
92 Smart waste vehicles

Project Partners

Sensoneo solution is deployed in Bratislava, Slovakia in cooperation with the City of Bratislava and OLO a.s., a city-owned waste collection company. Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia with 600k inhabitants. The project is supported by a grant from the European Innovation Council, which Sensoneo received in the summer of 2020 for the large-scale deployment of its solution to demonstrate its environmental and economic benefits.

Project Summary

Digitalization of waste infrastructure is in line with the city’s Strategy for Municipal Waste Management with the aim of transitioning to a circular economy for the years  2021 – 2026. The city expects savings on waste collection-related mileage and emissions.  The project includes several stages that will be implemented continuously until April 2022.  The project also includes testing of Sensoneo’s prototypes facilitating the introduction of „Pay as you sort“ models and recognizing fill levels of containers during the pick-up.

Expectations

01 Cleaner public spaces

02 More efficient waste collection services

03 Savings on waste collection related mileage and emissions

“For the citizens of Bratislava, this would mean cleaner public spaces and more efficient waste collection services.” Katarína Rajčanová, Spokeswoman, City of Bratislava

“Our goal is to have exact data on the volume of waste that residents produce. These data would be then be reflected in statistics at the taxpayer level. Each collection container or bag in the city will be tagged and its dumping will be recorded using the waste collection technology.” Ivana Maleš, Co-author of the city’s Strategy for Municipal Waste Management

Unique large-scale project

Considering the scope, size and technologies applied, the project represents the first-of-its-kind deployment on a global level. The use of smart technologies in the management and collection of waste is in its early stages as of yet – even the world’s most well-known capitals are piloting the technologies. At the moment, there is no reference from a large-scale deployment in the world that provides evidence of the benefits covering such a large scope – infrastructure management, process digitization, and dynamic collection.

“Cooperation with the Slovak capital is a logical and natural outcome, considering the focus of our company. We would like to thank the city of Bratislava and its waste management company OLO for their trust and active interest in new technologies with the power to make waste management and collection more efficient and the least disturbing to the environment.”

Tomáš Vincze Project Manager at Sensoneo

Digitalization of 85 000 bins

85 000 containers tagged and digitalized in Bratislava. RFID tag with OQ code.

To identify, track and trace the bins, the city will use Sensoneo’s RFID tags with unique codes that will be permanently installed on every bin. The actual digitalization will be performed using Sensoneo’s Inventory digitalization App. The app allows one-click identification with the RFID code of pre-registered inventories as well as the easy assignment of new stands and bins with detailed specifications, GPS positions, and accessibility details. Additional features include notifications on asset misplacement data.

1 753 Bin Sensors & Dynamic Route Planning

Containers for glass and semi-underground containers present the highest potential for savings – in terms of fuel and mileage as well as in terms of time and emissions. Glass waste is particularly troublesome due to its irregular filling cycle, and Sensoneo’s real-time sensors offer invaluable time savings by identifying when the collection is required, thereby eliminating unnecessary pickups and ensuring that bins won’t sit overfilled.

To empty the underground bins, there is a need for a vehicle with a hydraulic arm. This means extra costs and, in many cases, an unnecessary burden for traffic congestion as the emptying takes about 6-7 minutes.

This knowledge motivated the city to select 1 753 bins to be monitored with Sensoneo sensors. Besides the actual waste production monitoring, the data will be used to automate the optimization of waste collection routes targeting the shortest mileage possible and maximized capacity utilization of the vehicles on return to the depot.

The routes will be available to drivers in Sensoneo’s Driver Navigation app, which is designed for the specific needs of waste collection vehicles. This approach will also facilitate the easy onboarding of new drivers.

92 Smart Waste Trucks

92 collection trucks with WatchDog devices in Bratislava.

The lack of efficiency and transparency are some of the biggest challenges in waste management. The city of Bratislava will deploy Sensoneo’s service-monitoring tool: WatchDog on all vehicles to test the functionality of automatic identification of bins and bags authorized for waste collection, automatic verification of pick-up of each bin, and a precise recording of all the routes made.

The city’s waste management company OLO will also use Sensoneo’s Fleet Management to manage daily operations related to vehicles and routes.

Operators will be given a detailed and complete overview of all the operations made in the field and in the depot including the ability to receive real-time updates on the ongoing routes and locations of the trucks on the map. The tool also includes the Garage Dashboard, Incident reports, and detailed statistics including driving patterns.

Project Funding

The project is funded by the EIC Accelerator grant. EIC Accelerator is part of the European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot that offers Europe’s brightest and boldest entrepreneurs the chance to step forward and request funding for innovations that fuel the societal transition towards sustainability while supporting the EU’s competitiveness and leadership in clean technologies. Sensoneo has been selected as one of the companies to win this prestigious grant, targeted on innovative technology projects supporting the objectives of the European Green Deal.
